Danish B2 level means you can talk with Danes on most topics without either side slowing down much, follow the evening news and argue a point in writing. Prøve i Dansk 3 proves it, and as of October 2026 it is the general language requirement for Danish citizenship. Coming from B1, budget roughly 100 to 250 more hours.
What can you do at Danish B2 level?
B2 is the top of the CEFR's independent user band, and in Danish it shows up in very practical ways. You keep up in a group conversation at lunch, with interruptions, jokes and half-finished sentences. You follow a radio debate or a news report without subtitles. You write a complaint, a cover letter or a short report that a Dane would read without frowning. And you start hearing the difference between what is said and what is meant.
That last part depends on small words. Danish is full of modal particles that are almost impossible to translate one to one:
- Det er jo fredag. (It's Friday, after all, as we both know.)
- Han kommer nok. (He'll probably come.)
- Du er vel ikke syg? (You're not ill, are you?)
At B2 you understand them and start using them, and your Danish stops sounding like a textbook.
Listening is the other big shift. Spoken Danish has the glottal catch called stød, a soft d in words like mad (food) and gade (street), and a habit of shortening common phrases until they are a few syllables long. B2 learners still meet speech they can't follow, especially in strong dialects, but everyday speed no longer throws them.

Which exam proves Danish B2?
Prøve i Dansk 3. The executive order that governs these tests, in the version in force as of October 2026, says both its written and its oral part relate to B2 (BEK nr. 1687 of 16 December 2025).

Each test checks reading, writing and spoken communication, with listening inside the oral part. If you plan to take a degree taught in Danish, look at Studieprøven, which is set at C1: Danish universities may accept it in place of upper secondary Danish, and each one publishes the grade it wants.
Danish B1 vs B2: what changes?
B1 is about getting your message across. B2 is about doing it precisely, in the right tone, at normal speed. The milestones:
- The passive and the written register. You use the s passive and the blive passive by choice, not by accident: Ansøgningen skal sendes senest fredag (the application must be sent by Friday).
- Connectors that carry an argument: selvom, medmindre, derimod, til gengæld and ifølge. They let you weigh two sides instead of listing points.
- Modal particles. Jo, nok, vel and da move from puzzling to natural.
- Fixed expressions. Det kommer an på (it depends), have svært ved (find it hard), gå i gang med (get started on). Jeg har svært ved at forstå jysk means I find Jutlandic hard to understand, and plenty of Danes from Copenhagen would agree.
- Prepositions by habit. It is på arbejde (at work), i skole (at school) and på hospitalet (in hospital), and at B2 you stop translating these from your own language.
- Ear training. Dialects, fast colleagues and television without subtitles become manageable.
