Hungarian B2 level means you can talk, read and write in Hungarian on your own: you follow the news, argue a point and handle work emails, choosing suffixes and the right conjugation without stopping to think. In Hungary this is the középfokú (intermediate) level of the accredited language exam system, and for Hungarian as a foreign language the accredited exams come from ECL and ELTE Origó. From B1, expect about 150 to 200 more hours of study, often more for English speakers.
What can you do at Hungarian B2 level?
The CEFR describes B2 as understanding the main ideas of complex text, interacting with native speakers without strain on either side, and writing clear, detailed text. In Hungarian, that means:
- You understand radio and TV news at normal speed and follow a discussion between native speakers.
- You give and defend opinions: Szerintem... (I think...), Ezzel nem értek egyet, mert... (I don't agree with that, because...).
- You switch between the definite and indefinite conjugation without thinking: látom a házat (I see the house) but látok egy házat (I see a house).
- You place verbal prefixes correctly: megcsináltam (I did it) but nem csináltam meg (I didn't do it).
- You use the formal Ön with a third-person verb at work and in offices.
Typical B2 sentences:
- Ha több időm lett volna, elolvastam volna a könyvet. (If I'd had more time, I would have read the book.)
- Bár esett az eső, végigsétáltunk a Duna-parton. (Although it was raining, we walked all the way along the Danube embankment.)
- Megkértem a kollégámat, hogy nézze át a jelentést. (I asked my colleague to look over the report.)
- Olvastam a cikket, amelyről tegnap beszéltél. (I read the article you talked about yesterday.)
- Önnek mikor lenne alkalmas egy rövid megbeszélés? (When would a short meeting suit you?)
Which exam proves Hungarian B2 level?
Hungary has a state accreditation system for language exams. A pass at B2 is called a középfokú nyelvvizsga, and komplex means you passed both the written and the oral part. As of October 2026, two exam systems offer accredited Hungarian as a foreign language:
| Exam | Who runs it | Levels | CEFR link |
|---|---|---|---|
| ECL Hungarian | ECL exam centre, University of Pécs | A2, B1, B2, C1, all accredited | Official, levels aligned with CEFR |
| Origó Hungarian as a foreign language | ELTE Origó Language Centre, Budapest | B1, B2, C1 accredited; A2 not accredited | Official |
ECL lists Hungarian among its three state-accredited languages. Origó has announced that its Hungarian exam changes in 2027, and the current format can be taken for the last time in February 2027 (ELTE Origó). For any official use in Hungary, choose an accredited exam and take the komplex version.
Hungarian B1 vs B2: what changes?
At B1 you get your message across. At B2 the suffixes, prefixes and word order start doing the work for you. The milestones:
- Suffix chains. Possessive and case endings stack without effort: házaimban (in my houses), barátainkkal (with our friends).
- Verbal prefixes and word order. Prefixes split off in negation, focus and commands: Nézd meg. (Look at it.) Ne nézd meg. (Don't look at it.)
- Conditional past and subjunctive. Volna for things that didn't happen, and the subjunctive after hogy, kell and akar.
- Participles. Olvasott könyv (a book that has been read), olvasandó (to be read), and adverbial forms like ülve (sitting).
- Causatives. Megjavíttattam az autót. (I had the car repaired.)
- Connectors. Azonban, ugyanakkor and ennek ellenére for written argument.
