Brazilian Portuguese B2 level means you can keep up with Brazilians at their natural speed: follow a group conversation full of slang, watch the news and a novela, argue a point at work and write a clear, detailed text. Brazil's official exam, Celpe-Bras, has no CEFR levels, but its Intermediário Superior result is often compared to B2. From B1, budget roughly 150 to 200 more hours, which is about a year at 30 minutes a day.
What can you do at Brazilian Portuguese B2?
B2 sits at the top of the independent band of the CEFR scale: you understand the main ideas of complex texts and talk with a fluency that makes regular conversation with native speakers work for both sides. For the general description, see what B2 level means. In Brazilian Portuguese, B2 is about speed and register.
You follow informal speech with its contractions (tá, pra, cê, né) and switch to a more careful style in a meeting or an email. You use the personal infinitive (antes de vocês saírem, before you leave), the imperfect subjunctive in hypotheses (se eu soubesse, if I knew) and compound tenses like tinha feito (had done). You know that tenho feito means "I've been doing lately", not a one-off "I have done", and you choose between a gente and nós to suit the setting.
Typical B2 sentences:
- Se eu soubesse, teria te avisado. (If I'd known, I would have warned you.)
- Mesmo que chova, a gente vai à praia. (Even if it rains, we're going to the beach.)
- Dizem que o governo vai reduzir os impostos. (They say the government is going to cut taxes.)
- Caso você precise de ajuda, é só me avisar. (If you need help, just let me know.)
- Por mais que eu tente, não consigo entender esse sotaque. (However hard I try, I can't understand that accent.)
These are Brazilian through and through: te between the verbs in teria te avisado, a gente for "we", and é só plus an infinitive for "just".
Which exam proves Brazilian Portuguese B2?
Brazil's official exam is Celpe-Bras, run by Inep, the federal institute for educational studies. It's one exam with four certified levels, decided by your score, and it has no official CEFR mapping.
| Celpe-Bras result | Score | Often compared to | CEFR link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intermediário | 2.00 to 2.75 | B1 | Approximate, no official mapping |
| Intermediário Superior | 2.76 to 3.50 | B2 | Approximate |
| Avançado | 3.51 to 4.25 | C1 | Approximate |
| Avançado Superior | 4.26 to 5.00 | C2 | Approximate |
Inep describes Intermediário Superior as meeting the Intermediário description, but with less frequent slips and interference from your first language in pronunciation and writing (Inep FAQ). Treat the B2 comparison as an approximation. Institutions decide which level they require and whether a certificate expires, so ask before you sit the exam.
Brazilian Portuguese B1 vs B2: what changes?
B1 is independent; B2 is relaxed. If B1 still feels shaky, the Brazilian Portuguese B1 page lists its milestones. B2 adds:
- The personal infinitive. Pra vocês entenderem (so you understand), depois de eles chegarem (after they arrive).
- Imperfect and pluperfect subjunctive. Se eu tivesse sabido (if I had known), and pedi que ele viesse (I asked him to come).
- Register switching. Casual speech with friends, o senhor and a senhora with older people and clients, and a formal written style for work.
- Connectors for argument. No entanto (however), ou seja (in other words), aliás (in fact), por isso (that's why).
- Listening at full speed. Group conversations, podcasts and regional accents, from carioca to gaúcho.
